The Extraction of the Stone of Madness (The Cure
of Folly) 200k
-
during medieval times, it was not an uncommon practice to remove stones from
the head, however in this painting, the object being removed is not stones,
but a flower.

The Haywain 573k total -
right panel(eden) ;
left panel(hell) ; center

-
One of Boschs' earliest depictions of hell, this shows eden on one panel,
and then earth with greedy people following a cart of hay carried by demons
heading towards hell in the middle panel, with hell occupying the third
panel.
-
Christ Carrying the Cross
159k
-
Because of Boschs' affinity with death and demons, even his religios works
were demon ridden or filled with the faces of mocking humans. Here
is a good example.

The Garden of Earthly
Delights 599k total -

Right Panel ; Center

-
This piece, like many of boschs' other works is a 3 parter, starting first
with the shutters which depict the creation of the world, then having heaven
on the left and a icy yet nightmarish hell on the right with a world deeply
invloved in sin taking the middle piece.

Paradise and Hell

another bosch work which depicts heaven and hell.

The Temptation of St. Anthony
584k
total - left panel;
right panel; center panel
-
Boschs favorite heroes were the Saints who could be severely tempted, yet
hold steady and remain faithful. In the temptation of St. Anthony, the left
panel depicts physical punishment, the center contains a large black mass
and the right hand panel contains images of food and sex which would be tempting
to any man. Also, temptation in medieval times meant not only mental
temptations, but he is being beaten by demons.

The Ship of Fools
224k
-
this painting is extremely interesting because it depicts a small ship filled
with what he sees as being humanity. However, every occupant of the
ship is a fool. Eating, flirting, cheating, going after inattainable
things, that is how we live our lives. Each one of us must sail this
ship of wretched humanity, with no apparent course or destination. Even
the prominent Monk and Nun are included in this representation. In
this way, Boschs work was way ahead of it's time.

Death and the Miser
215k
-
This painting is intended to tell a moral story. It depicts a man who
is unprepared for death, hording all his wealth thinking himself invincible
without protecting himself, leaving his armour aside as he counts his stash.
Demons lurk all about him and death peers into the room, just waiting
until he is most vulnerable. Many people could feel a slight kinship
to this painting.
